Acheron Press

I founded Acheron Press in 2008 after one big publishing house insisted upon changing the title of The Meaning of Madness to just Madness.

The name ‘Acheron’ was inspired by a verse from Vergil’s Æneid,

Flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta movebo.

The line is often translated as, ‘If I cannot bend Heaven, I shall move Hell,’ and was chosen by Freud as the epigraph to his Interpretation of Dreams.

According to the psychoanalyst Bruno Bettelheim, the line encapsulates Freud’s theory that people who have no control over the outside world turn inward to the underworld of their own minds.
